About SHIN Sang-Ok
Born in 1926, SHIN studied painting in Japan during the Japanese colonial rule and returned to Korea to pursue a filmmaking career. He married then Koreans’ heartthrob actress CHOI Eun-hee. Their marriage did not last long. After divorce, CHOI was kidnapped to North Korea in Hong Kong in 1978, and SHIN went through the same fate in July of the same year. It is still contentious whether SHIN was kidnapped by the North Korean espionages or he intended to go to the country on his own will. He spent several years in Camp 6 which was for political prisoners until 1983, and started to make 7 films including Salt (1985) and Runaway (1984) in North Korea. In 1986, the couple made their dramatic exodus from the communist regime for the US. SHIN returned to Korea in 2000, and directed his 75th film A Winter Story (2004), which has never been screened to the public. He died of declining health after lung surgery on April 11, 2006.
