English popstar Sting handed out the Grand Prize to Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan for Uzak. The latter thanked the Jury, Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux, and dedicated the award to Yilmaz Güney, director of the 1982 Palme d’Or winner, Yol. |
Géraldine Chaplin awarded American director Gus Van Sant the Best Director prize for his latest opus Elephant. “All my thanks to the producers and the kids in the movie,” he said. “I came to Cannes in 1995 to present To Die For during a gala dinner. Aside from that, I never managed to get one of my films shown in Cannes. Winning the Palme d’Or is a sort of miracle, a stroke of good luck, a tremendous amount of joy.” |
Samira Makhmalbaf received the Jury Prize from French actress Judith Godrèche for her moving tale entitled Five in the Afternoon. She said: “I don’t want to be President of the Republic – George Bush being the most famous at present -, I prefer making films. I am happy to receive such a prize. Cannes has paid us a great deal of attention. This film comes from a far-off region and presents quite a contrast with this award ceremony. This proves that this film can exist both in the heart and spirit of people.” |
Valeria Bruni Tedeschi awarded the Montreal director Denys Arcand the Best Screenplay Award for his poignant tale of a dying man, The Barbarian Invasions. The Canadian helmer thanked festivalgoers for their warm welcome. “It always feels great to receive an award. If I didn’t win prizes anymore, I don’t think I would ever come back,” Arcand declared.
“A majority of festivalgoers probably thought we’d win the Palme d’Or, but we didn’t. We’re happy with what we have. As tradition would have it, you never see a comedy win in a festival. I don’t know why. It was the same thing with Charlie Chaplin. He was never awarded an Oscar when he was alive. If you ask me, I think the jury members take their job way too seriously. Only the really serious, the really sad and the really bloody movies win. So, Best Screenplay, that’s surprising. I was expecting to get the Jury Prize or Best Director, one of the consolation prizes.” |
French veteran actor Philippe Noiret handed out the Best Actress award to Marie-Josée Croze for her role as a “junkie” in Arcand’s Barbarian Invasions. Unfortunately absent from the ceremony, Denys Arcand accepted the prize on her behalf. “She heard the news during a show,” explained producer Denise Robert. |
The two Turkish stars of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Uzak, Muzaffer Ozdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak, were awarded the Best Actor prize. Both actors were absent from the ceremony. Twenty-eight year old actor Toprak tragically died in a car accident last December, two days after the end of the shoot, and Ozdemir was seemingly too camera-shy. English actress/producer Elizabeth Hurley handed out the prize to a member of the film’s team. “The two actors are amateurs. They are not professionals. The older one is my old friend from mountaineering. He works as a restorer of old buildings. The young one was my cousin. He lived in the countryside. Both of them acted in all of my films – sometimes small roles, but they were available in all of my films,” Nuri Bilge Ceylan explained.
